ABOUT US

Hi there!

I'm Jared Regier, the farmer and educator behind Blossom Grove Family Farm.  I'm passionate about building a more sustainable future and I'm doing my part by creating a sustainable source of food for my family and community.  This new farm is just getting started, but it's not my first foray into food production. Read on to find out how I got here.

Where it All Started

In my first career as a high school science teacher, I learned a lot about the impact humans were having on our planet.  I was sharing this understanding with my students in the programs I taught and that work was important, but I was frustrated with the lack of action takers in our community.  I wanted to do less talking about how we could be living here more sustainably, and do more hands-on work to start creating the best world that I could imagine.  That's why, after 10 years of teaching, I dropped everything to start growing food.  I had no farm land, no fancy equipment, and much less experience than I thought.  I solved the land problem by borrowing multiple urban backyards to use for our growing space, I avoided the need for expensive machinery by growing intensively and using my own human labour, and as for the know-how...well, let's just say that it was a steep learning curve!  I stuck with it though, and eventually earned myself a master's degree in urban food production from the college of real life.  My farm was called Chain Reaction Urban Farm, and I used my collection of private urban lots to grow quality food and distribute it to over 50 families each week. 

From Conversations to the Classroom

My urban farm plots were very visible to the public—tucked right into the city grid—so I chatted with a lot of people as I worked and found myself answering questions all the time.  People were curious about our methods and eager to learn how to grow their own food.  I realized then that there weren’t many clear, practical resources for home growers who wanted to get serious about food production—so I built one.  I put my education experience back to work and launched the Vegetable Academy, where I teach the art and science of small scale food production.  There are a few fun tricks I use to give my vegetables the upper hand, but largely our success in the garden is not about flashy hacks—it’s about understanding our soil and our climate, and setting up practical systems that get consistent results.  Through my online Seed to Table course, Instagram and YouTube videos, and my written Field Journal, I try to show people not just what I’m doing on the farm, but why it works.

The Final Piece of the Puzzle

Blossom Grove Family Farm is the next chapter—and really, the last piece of the puzzle.  After years of urban farming and teaching others how to grow, I wanted a place where I could bring all of it together: growing, experimenting, teaching, and feeding people at the same time.

Now on our new 3-acre property just outside the city, I’m setting up a permanent growing space with different zones that allow us to produce food for our farm family, host educational workshops, and test methods that I can share with growers everywhere.  This farm isn’t just a business—it’s a learning lab, a playground, and a place where people can reconnect with the sustainable natural systems that feed their body and soul.
